Picture this... you just found out that meditation, which is the practice of staying present to connect with the internal self, so you sit on the floor, cross-legged as you see all the yogi's do and wait. Within seconds your mind begins to race.... "What am I doing here? I don't know what I'm doing? What if I'm doing it wrong? Wait, did I shut off the stove?" ... you begin to think of everything and everything... exactly opposite of what you had hoped to achieve, which was shutting the mind off and staying present.
You slowly peek open your eyes to look at the time... it's only been 2 minutes! What?! You readjust your body, close your eyes again and commit to getting into a meditation. Within seconds your mind begins to race and you think, "this is no use." So you open your eyes, give up and promise to do it again one day.
Sound familiar? I'm sure we have all been there at one point early on in our meditation practice. The great part about it is that it is called a "practice." What happens when we practice something on a regular basis? We get better!!
This is our wish for you and why today, on Wellness Wednesday, we will offer you some simple tips to begin your meditation practice.
If you have never meditated before it can be daunting task. Here are some simple suggestions to make this process more enjoyable:
1) Start with just a few minutes a day. Perhaps the first day you do 2-5 minutes then each day add 2-3 minutes.
2) Set a timer for how long you want to stay in meditation. This will allow you to fully relax into the moment without worrying about the time.
3) Listen to a guided meditation. It will make staying focused much easier.
4) Put on some relaxing music to keep your mind from wondering.
5) Focus on a mantra, or positive statement, to stay focused.
6) If you feel your mind wander, acknowledge the thought, then release it and focus your attention back to the guided meditation or music you are listening to.
7) Set an intention and know why you want to add this practice into your daily routine. When you understand your reasons for taking the time to sit in meditation daily it will make it much easier.
