The Coup is a restaurant that you cannot miss when you are in Calgary. If you live there then all the better, go at least once a week, this place rocks. The full vegetarian and vegan menu with retro inspired atmosphere is cozy and clean and will have you feeling right at home without the prep or dishes. The only problem with this place is what to choose from the fantastic menu.
Well, we are here to help you with that!
From the moment we walked in we were welcomed by the awesome staff and personally met the chef Jamie-Lynn Kingsmith, a talented girl with a cool name.
After meeting her and tasting her food there is no question why she is there. Her passion and warmth for what she does and what she creates for you are palpable.
We were lucky enough to get a few minutes with Ms. Kingsmith to ask her the fine details and get a few pics!
Our first review is the all time fav... The Upstream Burger. Ask anyone who has eaten this mouthful of delight and it should be on your bucket list. The ciabatta bun is fresh from Byblos Bakery and is a perfect blend of springy chewiness with a slightly crisp top.
The patty has a light, wholesome cashew and yam base blended to perfection with roasted garlic and seeds. Topped with sesame seeds and fresh aromatic dill that will haunt your senses until you finally sink your teeth in. This fine burger specimen is oven roasted and topped with fresh mixed greens, red onion and garlic aioli sauce; serving you up an almost guilt-free eating experience.
The dill, roasted garlic and slight sweetness of the yam make this a mouthwatering sensation unique to the veggie burger world. Presented with the house salad and your choice of maple balsamic dijon, za’atar tahini lemon or fine herb champagne vinaigrette you will be dreaming about this on the daily. Want it gluten free? Order the gluten free option. Vegan, no problem, order Dayia cheese or just have it naked. This burger holds its own and needs nothing except your tastebuds and appetite.
Why you want this burger:
1. Vegan, vegetarian, gluten free - you can have it all.
2. It's healthy, sans bun, but the bun is deadly.
3. The atmosphere of this place is awesome. Cozy with a hint of mid century mod. The quaint patio is right in the action of 17th Ave, the place to be in Calgary.
4. The flavour of this patty is unique and absolutely one of the best things you can put in your mouth.
5. The price reflects the quality; $17.00 and worth every penny.
6. Don't feel like a burger? That's cool. The menu is filled with other amazing dishes to enjoy. Some of our other Coup favourites, that we hope to review for you in the future, include the Tandoori Cauliflower Wings and Eggplant Sleeping for starters, Beach-Front Hot Pot and Magic Dragon Bowl for dinner, the Messy Jessy for breaky and the Lemon-Cashew Coconut "Square" for dessert.
